Hyper-local Foodscapes

Cuba has long been recognized as one of the world leaders in sustainable urban agriculture – an accomplishment that is made even more impressive given the country’s long history of economic and development challenges. Within this context, Cubans have found ways to opportunistically tailor hyper-local food provisioning to existing urban conditions; in effect layering agriculture over the framework of the city. Grassroots farming efforts, combined with robust government programming, has helped Cuban cities to reduce food miles, improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables, bolster food literacy, and ultimately, shore up the entire country’s food security.
