Bristol – City of Sanctuary

Das politische Projekt der Europäischen Union scheint zunehmend zu bröckeln, ebenso wie der Glaube an eine europäische oder gar globale Gesellschaft. Die Festung Europa wird immer mehr zum beschämenden Prüfstein für den Kontinent und seine Ideale. Eine andere Migrationspolitik zeigt sich oft auf lokaler, städtische Ebene: Am Beispiel Bristol wird sichtbar, dass die Themen Migration und Diversität durchaus pragmatischer und wesentlich progressiver verhandelt werden können.

Bristol, im Südwesten Englands gelegen, zählt nach London zu einer der kulturell vielfältigsten Städte Großbritanniens. Im Jahr 2011 bewirkte ein zivilgesellschaftlicher Zusammenschluss, unterstützt durch den Stadtrat und lokale Unternehmen, den Beitritt zum landesweit bestehenden Netzwerk »City of Sanctuary« (zu dt. »Stadt als Zufluchtsort«). Das Ziel der Initiative besteht in der Etablierung einer Kultur des »Willkommens« und des Miteinanders. »City of Sanctuary« richtet sich dabei nicht ausschließlich an MigrantInnen, sondern an alle von Marginalisierung Betroffenen: Es geht um eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Vision und die schrittweise Entfaltung der dafür notwendigen kulturellen Voraussetzungen.

BRISTOL City of Sanctuary. Where the local is a blend of the global

The political project of the European Union, once founded to push ahead the ideals of peace and unity, seems to be in a crucial crisis. Indeed, there are many reasons leading to a loss of trust in such a thing as a European or global society. However, a very different picture of the situation can be seen if you look at the local scale of the urban community. With joint efforts, a civic society and a city government can cope in a much more pragmatic and progressive way with the phenomena of migration and diversity.
This programme presents the City of Bristol, located in the southwest of England and one of the most culturally diverse cities of the island nation. In 2011, a coalition of different Bristolian civic groups, supported by the city council as well as a number of local companies, succeeded in entering the nationwide network called »City of Sanctuary«. The goal of the movement is to create a culture of welcoming and peaceful togetherness which acknowledges the increased vulnerability of migrants but is not selectively targeted towards them. Rather, the aim consists in a vision for the society as a whole and the gradual evolvement of cultural knowledge and skills.
