I was working on what philosophers call a big idea: Is urban man trapped and incapable of realising this? This question related to a wider consideration of freedom and the doubtful concept of free will in contemporary societies. I was looking at the assumptions we make about our lives. Not to sneer or feel personally superior, but to understand. And thinking is a preparation for living, not a substitute for it. So I needed both the orientation and the experiences.
